The Leach Pottery
In 1920 Bernard Leach settled in St Ives and with the help of his friend Shoji Hamada, started the pottery in partnership with Mrs Horne who ran the St. Ives Handcraft Guild. Their joint capital bought a strip of land bordering a stream on a hill outside St. Ives surrounded by farmland. A cottage and a studio were built and with local workmen Leach and Hamada constructed a wood burning climbing kiln, the first of its type to be built in the west |

Wenford Bridge Seth Cardew
Where the tiny stone bridge at Wenford crosses the River Camel there is a cluster of stone buildings set peacefully beside the river.During the 1930s, Michael Cardew, a fourth generation Oxford scholar with an insatiable passion for ceramics, wanted to move his young family from Winchcombe in Gloucestershire to Cornwall "where the light was right". He purchased this idyllic holding beside the river and Wenford Inn became The Wenford Bridge Pottery. |

[ A l i D r e w - C e r a m i c s ]
Working in Porcelain I create simple, hand thrown tableware and one-off pieces. My concerns are quality, aesthetic, good design and function, within spontaneity and simplicity of form. My aim is to show clarity and a controlled fluidity throughout my work and to create a rhythm within repetition. The glazing is subtle capturing the softness of clay and enhancing its unique fired translucency. |
